And then, suddenly, Charmaine started to quake again and utter those disturbing grunting noises. Like she was possessed.
We all stared at her. Well, I stared at her.
And then she said, 'I can feel his presence. He is among us again! Spirit! Show yourself!'
Max looked up at the mirror. 'There it is!' he shouted.

I turned around to have a look, even though I was scared myself. Diane just held her eyes firmly closed and whimpered. And sure enough, there in the mirror was the shadowy figure again.
It was so creepy.

'I command you, spirit!' Charmaine ordered. 'Leave Sean in peace. Let his spirit return to him. I banish you! I banish you! I banish you!'
And after she said, 'I banish you' for the third time, we all heard a loud cracking noise.

I watched as that large ornate mirror started to split with fissures in front of my eyes and bits of it fell to the floor. Then, in one loud crack, the whole mirror just fell to pieces. I threw my hands over my head and ducked to avoid the shattering shards.
All of us, even Charmaine, ran for our lives. We were running so fast that no one noticed that Sean was running right there alongside us.

We all ran back to the tent. Everyone looked very shaken up.
'I don't want to go to another séance, Tommy,' Sean cried.
And Tommy just hugged and hugged him and patted his hair. There were tears in Tommy's eyes too.
'They're too scary, Tommy,' he blubbered.

Sean said he remembered nothing about being a 'Zombie' or that we went back to that room a second time. As far as he knew, he was still there at that first séance. And I believed him.
And everyone else did too.

Tommy and I stayed over at the boys' camp with Max and Bradley. Sean had fallen asleep in the girls' tent. We thought it best to leave him there in peace. I found out later that meant Diane had to sleep on the tent floor.

The next morning, Tommy and I walked back to the entry sign just in case Mike had left word about why he didn't show up. But there was nothing there.
'I have to call Mom,' Tommy said. 'First I'm going to ask to speak with Mike like there's nothing going on, but if he's not there, I'll have to tell her everything.'

Tommy and I walked over to the pay phone. We both emptied our pockets of whatever coins we had. I gave my coins to Tommy and he made his call.
I waited a little distance away while Tommy was on the phone.

I started to think about everything that had happened.
It was great to see Diane, but I didn't really help her with the Charmaine problem. I got swept up in her hocus-pocus just as much as Diane did.
But I got to see her which, I suppose, made the whole thing worthwhile.

Well, at least Max knew to steer clear. At least that was something.
I just thought how some of my 'schemes' seem to get other people into trouble or difficulties. Like Tommy and Sean.
I told myself that I would take all the blame back home for any bad stuff that resulted, because of our adventure.
I was just thinking this, when I heard the most heart-wrenching sound I ever heard in my pre-adolescent life.

It was Tommy. He was wailing and wailing. The receiver was just dangling down from where he had dropped it.
Tommy rushed over to me. He grabbed me by the shoulders. His eyes were wild and staring. I thought he had gone mad.
'He's dead! He's dead! Oh my God! Mike!!'
He let me go and paced around in little circles. His tears were streaming down.
'Mike's dead! He's dead!'

Tommy told me that his mom was hysterical when he called her. She didn't know where he was. The police had called late last night to say that Mike had been found dead. It was a car crash. He'd been road racing and flew off an embankment on a back road somewhere up near Padfoot Camping Ground, they said.
When Tommy's mom called my mother to tell him about Mike and found out we weren't there, it threw both our families into a panic.
They even had the police out looking for us.

There would be an almighty horror-show when I got home, but I couldn't worry about that now.

Mr. and Mrs. Harby were driving up to collect us and identify Mike's body and all the other gruesome things they'd have to do. Tommy and I went and got Sean and the three of us just waited in silence at that sign until the Harby's arrived.
I couldn't feel anything. I was just numb.
Like a Zombie.
